Surah Baqarah, Aayat 35
“We said: ‘O Aadam! You and your wife stay in Jannat.’”
Difference prevails about the time when his (Hazrat Aadam’s) wife was created. Suddi narrates from Ibn Abbaas, Ibn Mas’ood and several Sahaabah (Radhiyallahu anhum) that when Allah Ta’ala expelled Iblees from Jannat and settled Aadam there, he remained for a time alone. There was no one to keep him company.
Then Allah Ta’ala put him to sleep and extracted a rib from his left rib cage. In place of the extracted rib, flesh was put. From the rib, which was removed, Allah Ta’ala created Hawwa (Alaihas Salaam).
When Hazrat Aadam (Alaihis Salaam) woke up he saw a woman sitting next to him. He asked: “Who are you?” She replied: “I am a woman.” He asked: “Why have you been created?” She replied: “For you to take comfort in me.”
The Malaaikah asked: “What is her name?” “Hawwa,” the reply was given. Why was she called Hawwa? Because she was created from something living. (In Arabic a living being is called ‘Hayy’. Hawwa thus means ‘a living female’.)”
It is reported from Umar and Ibn Abbaas (Radhiyallahu anhuma): “Allah Ta’ala sent an army of Malaaikah to carry Aadam and Hawwa (Alaihimas Salaam) on a golden throne, like how kings are carried. Their garments were of Noor (celestial light), and both had a golden crown studded with rubies and pearls.
Hazrat Aadam had a belt studded with pearls and rubies. In this manner they were taken into Jannat.”
The latter narration indicates that Hazrat Hawwa was created before Hazrat Aadam was entered into Jannat, whilst the former narration indicates that she was created in Jannat. Allah Ta’ala knows best the true state of affairs.
There is consensus that the ‘wife’ mentioned in the Aayat refers to Hawwa (Alaihas Salaam). There is furthermore consensus that she was created from him. Allah Ta’ala says in Surah Nisa (Verse 1): “That Being Who created you from one person, and He created from that person its spouse.”
In Surah A’raaf (Verse 189) He states: “And He made from it (the single soul – Aadam Alaihis Salaam) its spouse so that he (Aadam) finds comfort in her.”
Hazrat Hasan (Rahmatullahi alaih) reports from Rasulullah (Sallallahu alaihi wasallam) that he said: “Indeed a woman was created from the rib of a man. Thus, if you are going to straighten it you will break it. If you leave her, you will benefit from her, and she will remain alright.”
