The Request of the Wives of Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) for an Increase in Maintenance
Once, the Azwaaj-e-Mutahharaat (the Noble and Pure Wives) asked Rasulullah (Sallallahu alaihi wasallam) for an increase in maintenance. Upon this, the Aayat, “O Nabi! Tell your wives that if they want the life of this world…”, whereas apparently their request was reasonable because at that time Rasulullah (Sallallahu alaihi wasallam) was achieving many victories in his campaigns. By virtue of the victories, all Muslims were becoming well to do.
Despite this, Rasulullah (Sallallahu alaihi wasallam) did not tolerate worldly affluence for himself and his household.
On this occasion, the Azwaaj-e-Mutahharaat requested more expenses. They never made such a request in difficult times. In fact, during difficult times, occasionally, there was no water at home even, yet they did not complain to Nabi (Sallallahu alaihi wasallam).
Yes, on account of the military victories when the Muslims started to become affluent and difficulties started dissipating, they (the Noble and Pure wives of Rasulullah, Sallallahu alaihi wasallam) also desired some ease (wus’at) for themselves. However, this was against the nature of Rasulullah (Sallallahu alaihi wasallam).
