The Request of the Wives of Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) for an Increase in Maintenance (Part Three)
When this Aayat was revealed to Rasulullah (Sallallahu alaihi wasallam), he first went to Hazrat Aishah (Radhiyallahu anha), because Hazrat Aishah was still young. She came to Nabi (Sallallahu alaihi wasallam) at the age of nine, and she was eighteen years of age when Nabi (Sallallahu alaihi wasallam) passed away.
So, Nabi (Sallallahu alaihi wasallam) thought that she is still young, let it not be that she blurts out: We want the dunya. Hence, he told her before reciting the Aayaat: “O Aishah! I want to ask you something, but don’t be hasty in answering. Consult with your parents and then tell me”. Rasulullah (Sallallahu alaihi wasallam) knew well that her parents would never advise her to separate herself from him.
Thereafter, he recited these Aayaat to her. Listening to the Aayaat, Hazrat Aishah became stirred, and she said:
اَفِيْ هٰذَا اَسْتَاْمِرُ اَبَوَيَّ
“What! Must I consult my parents for this!
I have chosen Allah, His Rasool and the Aakhirat!”
This answer brought immense joy to Rasulullah (Sallallahu alaihi wasallam).
Hazrat Aishah then said: “Yaa Rasulallah! Don’t tell any other wife that Aishah gave this answer.” Rasulullah (Sallallahu alaihi wasallam) replied: “If any of them asks me, then I am not going to conceal your response.”
