Her Parents and First Two Marriages

The first person to accept Islam in the world and the first wife of Rasulullah (Sallallahu alaihi wasallam) was Hazrat Khadijah (Radhiyallahu anha). She was popularly known, even before the advent of Islam, as Taahirah (the pure; the chaste). She was born fifteen years before Rasulullah (Sallallahu alaihi wasallam).

Her father’s name was Khuwaylid, and he was a much-honoured person among the Arabs. Her mother’s name was Faatimah.

It is the Way of Allah Ta’ala that when something needs to happen then He creates the means for it. It was written for Hazrat Khadijah (Radhiyallahu anha) that she was to have the honour of being the wife of Sayyidul Mursaleen (Sallallahu alaihi wasallam). Thus, she had been married twice, but neither husband remained alive.

Her father had her married, according to custom, to a person from their tribe who was called Abu Haalah. Two children were born during this marriage, and after some time Abu Haalah passed away.

After a short while Hazrat Khadijah (Radhiyallahu anha) married a person by the name of Ateeq. A girl was born from this marriage. It was taqdeer that Ateeq also left this world. (One version states that she first married Ateeq and after him she was married to Abu Haalah.)

Now, Hazrat Khadijah (Radhiyallahu anha) was a widow. Although distinguished and noble people from the Quraish proposed marriage to her, she had refused. This was because a special virtue and honour had been written for her.
