WUDHU AND THE INCREASE IN INTELLECT
Translation of the Text
Title: The Fifth Wisdom of Ablution (Wudhu) is the Increase of Intellect
Text:
“Through purity (Tahaarah), the substance of intellect within one’s natural disposition (Tabi’at) continually increases. And wherever the intellect is complete, the presence before Allah (Hudhoor-e-Ilaahi) will also be complete.”
(Al-Masaalihul ‘Aqliyyah)
A Comprehensive Analysis of the Fifth Wisdom
This fifth wisdom from Hakimul Ummat, Maulana Ashraf Ali Thanwi (Rahmatullahi alayh), presents a deep and often overlooked connection between physical purity, intellectual clarity, and spiritual presence. It moves beyond the ritual to illuminate a causal relationship that is central to self-reformation.
- Deconstructing the Key Terms: ‘Aql and Hudhoor
To understand this wisdom, we must first grasp the Islamic conception of two pivotal concepts:
- العقل (Al-‘Aql – The Intellect): In the Islamic paradigm, ‘Aql is not merely the brain’s capacity for logic or information processing. It is a spiritual faculty of perception—a divine light within the human soul that allows one to distinguish between truth and falsehood (Al-Haqq wal Baatil), right and wrong, and to perceive the consequences of actions. It is the internal compass that guides one towards goodness and away from evil. When this light is strong, it leads to wisdom (Hikmah); when it is weak or clouded, it leads to foolishness (Safah).
- الحضور (Al-Hudhoor – Presence): This refers to a state of full attentiveness and consciousness of being in the divine presence. It is the opposite of negligence (Ghaflat). In the context of worship, and especially Ritual Prayer (Salaah), Hudhoor-e-Ilaahi means that the heart and mind are entirely focused on and aware of Allah, with no distraction from the self or the world.
- The Causal Chain: Purity → Intellect → Presence
Hazrat Thanwi outlines a precise spiritual cause-and-effect:
“Through purity, the substance of intellect… continually increases.”
How does this work?
- Purity Cleanses the Mirror of the Heart: The Akaabir often use the metaphor of the heart (Qalb) as a mirror. When this mirror is polished, it reflects reality clearly. When it is rusty or dirty, the reflection is distorted. The “dirt” on the heart is the accumulation of sins, base desires (Shahawaat), and worldly attachments—all manifestations of the “darkness of animalism” discussed in the previous wisdom.
- Wudhu as a Polishing Agent: Each act of Wudhu, performed with the intention of obeying Allah, serves to polish this mirror. As the physical body is cleansed with water, the spiritual heart is cleansed from the veils of heedlessness. A clean heart is the seat of a sound intellect.
- The Result: An Increase in ‘Aql: When the heart is polished, the innate spiritual faculty of ‘Aql—that light of discernment—shines more brightly. Its “substance” increases. This means:
- Your understanding of Deen deepens.
- You become quicker to recognize the tricks of the ego (Nafs).
- You can more easily discern the right course of action in daily life.
- Worldly illusions lose their power over you, as you see them for what they truly are.
“And wherever the intellect is complete, the presence before Allah will also be complete.”
This is the ultimate culmination of the process. A complete or sound intellect (Aql-e-Taam) is one that has perceived the ultimate reality: that nothing truly exists except Allah and His command. It recognizes that the entire world is “Fāni” (perishable)…and only Allah is “Bāqi” (Everlasting).
- Therefore, a person endowed with such an intellect cannot but be in a state of Hudhoor. Their heightened awareness naturally and constantly turns to the Ever-Present Reality. When such a person stands in Salaah, their prayer is not a series of motions but a profound communion, because their intellect has already confirmed the truth of what they are doing.
- Practical Implications for the Seeker (Saalik)
For one engaged in Islaah-e-Nafs, this wisdom provides a powerful practical motivation:
- Wudhu as an Intellectual Exercise: Approach Wudhu not just as a cleaning ritual, but as a direct means to sharpen your spiritual intellect. Every time you feel confused, spiritually dull, or overwhelmed by desires, perform Wudhu with the specific intention of asking Allah to illuminate your ‘Aql.
- The Bridge to Khushu’: Many struggle with a lack of concentration (Khushu’) in Salaah. The solution often lies before the prayer. By perfecting your Wudhu with this understanding, you are actively building the state of Hudhoor that will then flow seamlessly into your Salaah.
- A Holistic Development: This wisdom beautifully ties together the entire purpose of the Shariah. It shows how a physical act, when performed with correct intention, leads to:
- Spiritual Purification (from Ghaflat and Baheemiyyat)
- Intellectual Enlightenment (increase of ‘Aql)
- Ultimate Spiritual Fulfilment (Hudhoor-e-Ilahi)
In conclusion, Hazrat Thanwi (Rahmatullahi alayh) teaches us that Wudhu is a divinely prescribed technology for the refinement of the human soul. It systematically dismantles the barriers between the servant and Allah—first by awakening us, then by cleansing us, then by making us beloved, then by subduing our base self, and finally, by illuminating our intellect so that we may stand in His presence with full consciousness and awe. This is the comprehensive path to becoming a true ‘Abd (servant) of Allah.
