An Important Directive to Guardians

Hazrat Abu Hurairah (Radhiyallahu anhu) reports that Rasulullah (Sallallahu alaihi wasallam) said:“When a person sends a proposal of marriage to you and you are satisfied with the Deen and the Akhlaaq of the person (then accept his proposal and) marry him. If you do not, it will be a fitnah on earth and big trouble.” (Tirmithi – Mishkaat)

This statement is addressed to the guardians of a girl, and it is an important directive for them.

If a boy who is Deeni-conscious and of good character and ways sends a proposal of marriage for your daughter or sister, then accept his proposal and get him married to your daughter or sister.

If you do not do so; if you reject his proposal and instead look for a wealthy and high-standing person’s proposal, like is the practice among the rich, the consequence of it will be that many girls will sit at home without being married and many boys will be without wives. This will not only lead to evil and zina becoming rife, but the guardians of those girls will also be overcome with immense embarrassment and shame. This will lead to fights and feuds with others. In the wake of the immorality and fights which will ensue complete chaos and anarchy will prevail.
