A Light That Will Manifest on the Ultimate Day
Translation of the Text
Title: The Sixth Wisdom of Ablution (Wudhu) is the Return of Light and Radiance
Text:
“The spiritual light and radiance (noor wa suroor) that had been stripped from the limbs due to sins and laziness (kasal) returns to them by performing Wudhu. This very spiritual light will be prominently manifest and radiant in the limbs of Wudhu on the Day of Resurrection.
As Rasulullah (Sallallahu alayhi wasallam) said:
‘Indeed, my Ummah will come on the Day of Resurrection with bright, radiant marks (Ghurran Muhajjaleen) from the traces of wudhu. So, whoever among you can increase his radiance, let him do so.’
In another Hadith, it is mentioned:
‘The adornment (hilyah) of the believer will reach wherever the water of Wudhu reaches.’
(Meaning, the believer will be adorned with the ornaments of Paradise on all the places touched by the water of Wudhu.)
A Detailed Explanation to Counter Apathy
This wisdom, perhaps more than any other, is a direct and powerful address to the heart of the Believer who feels neglectful or sees Wudhu as a burdensome chore. Hazrat Thanwi (Rahmatullahi alayh) connects our immediate spiritual state to an eternal, visual reward, using the most compelling imagery from the words of Nabi (Sallallahu alayhi wasallam).
- The Problem: Loss of Spiritual Light and Joy (Noor wa Suroor)
- The Cause: Sins (Ghunaah) and spiritual laziness/sloth (Kasal). Every sin, be it of the eye, tongue, ear, hand, or foot, leaves a stain of darkness on the heart and the limb involved. Similarly, laziness in Ibaadat—the apathy we feel—is not just a lack of action; it is an active rust that corrodes the heart’s capacity to feel joy in obedience.
- The Effect: This darkness strips away our inherent “spiritual light and radiance” (Roohaani Noor wa Suroor). This is why a neglectful person often feels:
- Heaviness in Salaah.
- A lack of sweetness in Ibaadah.
- A heart that feels hard and unmoved by the Qur’aan.
- A general spiritual dullness and lack of inner joy (suroor).
- The Divine Cure: Wudhu as a Restorative Act
Hazrat Thanwi states the solution with certainty: “The spiritual light and radiance…returns to them by performing Wudhu.”
This means Wudhu is not just a condition for Salaah; it is a direct spiritual treatment. Each time you perform Wudhu with consciousness:
- You are not just washing off physical dirt.
- You are actively scrubbing away the spiritual residue of negligence and minor sins that have accumulated since your last purification.
- The water, coupled with the act of obedience, becomes a means for Allah Subhaanahu Wa Ta’ala to restore the light of Faith and the radiance of spiritual joy to your limbs and your heart.
For the apathetic person: Understand that the very feeling of apathy you wish to overcome is the disease that Wudhu is designed to cure. Don’t wait to feel motivated to make Wudhu; make Wudhu to become motivated.
- The Eternal, Visible Reward: A Light That Shines in the Darkness of Qiyaamah
This is the most powerful motivator. The Hadith cited paints a breathtaking scene:
- On the Day of Resurrection—a day of unparalleled fear, confusion, and darkness—the Ummah will be recognizable by a visible, shining light.
- This light will not be generic. It will precisely mark the places touched by Wudhu water: the hands, arms, face, and feet.
- You will literally glow from your limbs of Wudhu.
Think of the imagery: Among billions of terrified people, you will be one of those shining beacons, identified as a follower of Nabi Muhammad (Sallallahu alayhi wasallam) by the very act you sometimes neglected.
- The Call to Action: “Increase Your Radiance!”
Rasululllah’s ﷺ command is not passive: “So whoever among you can increase his radiance, let him do so.”
This is a direct invitation to go beyond the obligatory. How can you “increase your radiance”?
- Perfect Your Obligatory Wudhu: Perform each step correctly, with presence of mind, and ensure every prescribed part is thoroughly washed.
- Increase Your Voluntary Wudhu (Nafil Wudhu): Make Wudhu not just for Salaah, but to renew your Imaan, to read Qur’aan, or simply to refresh your spiritual state. Every extra Wudhu adds to your light.
- Extend the Areas of Light (Hilyah): The second Hadith promises adornment from Paradise wherever the water reaches. Be meticulous in washing the entire prescribed area. Some Ulama mention the virtue of washing slightly above the elbows and ankles, within reason, to increase this zone of eternal beauty.
A Direct Message to the Apathetic Heart
If you find yourself making excuses, rushing through Wudhu, or feeling it is a heavy burden, remember:
- You are washing away spiritual darkness. That feeling of heaviness is what you are removing.
- You are polishing the limbs that will shine on the Day of Judgment. Every drop of water is an investment in an eternal light.
- Rasulullah (Sallallahu alayhi wasallam) himself instructed you to compete in this. He told you to increase your light. Will you ignore his direct advice?
- It is a guaranteed return. Unlike worldly efforts that may fail, every sincere Wudhu will bring back light and will add to your radiance in the Hereafter. There is no loss in this deal.
Let this understanding transform your relationship with Wudhu. See it not as a barrier to Salaah, but as the first step into Allah’s Light—a light that begins now in your heart and will manifest for all to see on the Greatest of Days.
May Allah Ta’ala make us among the Ghurran Muhajjaleen and grant us the understanding to cherish every act of purification. Ameen.
