Haidh in Haj

Reading Time: 2 minutes

Question: I intend going for Haj, but I am worried that if my monthly starts during the Haj, what am I going to do?

Answer: Your ‘worry’ is in view of not knowing the mas-alah. There is no ritual of Haj, besides Tawaaf of the Baitullah Shareef [and Sa’ee] which a woman cannot carry out in her monthly.

If the monthly starts before going into Ihraam for Haj or Umrah, then one should take a bath or make wudhu and put on Ihraam for Haj.

When going into Ihraam [in the state of haidh] you will not read the two Rakaats of Ihraam.

It is Sunnat for a Haaji to make Tawaaf when coming to Makkah Mukarramah. (This Tawaaf is called Tawaaf-e-Qudoom). If a woman is in her monthly, then she should leave out this Tawaaf.

If she becomes paak (clean) before going to Mina, then she should make this Tawaaf [Qudoom], otherwise there is no need to make it, and there is no kaffaarah [atonement] obligatory upon her.

The second Tawaaf is made on the 10th of Zil Hijjah. This Tawaaf is called Tawaaf-e-Ziyaarat. It is a Fardh of Haj. If a woman is in her monthly at this time, then she should defer this Tawaaf. When she becomes clean then she should perform the Tawaaf [Ziyaarat].

The third Tawaaf is made when departing from Makkah Mukarramah. This is waajib. However, if a woman is in her monthly during this time, then she should leave out this Tawaaf too. This waajib is also waived from her.

Insofar as Mina, Arafaat and Muzdalifah are concerned, it is not a condition for her to be in a clean state [free from haidh] to discharge the rites [Wuqoof and Rami] in these places.

And if a woman went into Ihraam for Umrah [and then haidh started], she should wait to become clean and then make the Tawaaf and Sa’ee.

If she does not get the time to make the Tawaaf and Sa’ee [of Umrah] in view of it being time to go to Mina [on account of the Days of Haj starting], then she should come out of her Umrah Ihraam [by simply combing her hair with the intention of releasing herself from the Umrah Ihraam] and she should initiate a Haj Ihraam without performing any Nafl Salaah.  She should merely make wudhu and the intention of Haj.

For the discarded Umrah Ihraam she should perform Umrah afterwards [that is, after the Days of Haj, and she should also give one damm].
