Combining the Prices of Your Gold and Silver in Zakaat

Reading Time: < 1 minute
  1. If you have gold and silver, but neither does the gold add up to the Nisaab of gold which is 87,48 grams, nor does the silver in your possession add up to the Nisaab of silver which is 612,36 grams, then combine the prices of the two.
  2. Combining the prices of the two means the price per weight of the two.
  3. If the combined worth of the gold and silver amounts to the price of 612,36 grams in silver, or the price of 87,48 grams in gold, then Zakaat is waajib.
  4. If, however, the gold and silver you have is so little that despite combining the two the amount does not equal the price of the silver or gold Nisaab, then Zakaat is not waajib.
  5. If you have silver amounting to the silver Nisaab and gold amounting to the gold Nisaab then it is not necessary to combine the two.
  6. In this case, you can pay the Zakaat of the gold by giving 2½% of the price of the total weight of the gold, and 2½% of the price of the total weight of silver.
  7. If you wish to combine the price of the gold and silver when you do have the Nisaab of both, then this is also permissible provided that it is calculated according to the Nisaab which is of more benefit to the poor.
  8. Generally, the price of the silver Nisaab is less, hence the price of silver is calculated and Zakaat given accordingly.
