Prematurely Breaking the Fast

  1. A person broke his/her fast thinking that the sun had set. (In other words, thinking that it was time to break the fast.) It transpired that the sun had not set (or that the Azaan for Maghrib was given before the time of Maghrib had set in). The fast is not valid.
  2. A Qadha fast will have to be kept for this invalid fast.
  3. There is no Kaffaarah (60-day atonement).
  4. Even after prematurely breaking the fast, it is not permissible to eat or drink for the remaining time till the sun sets (in other words, till it is breaking fast time).
