Having the Silver Nisaab When Combining One’s Gold and Cash
Reading Time: < 1 minute
- A person has some gold and some excess cash.
- If he or she converts the cash into gold, the total weight of all the gold he/she then possesses does not reach the Nisaab of gold.
- However, if this person converts the gold and the cash into silver then it reaches the Nisaab of silver.
- In this case he or she has to give Zakaat.
- Example:
- Zainab has gold jewellery and some cash savings.
- The gold jewellery she possesses equals 70 grams of gold.
- The cash she has saved up equals 10 grams of gold.
- She thus has in her possession equivalent of 80 grams of gold.
- The gold Nisaab is 87,48 grams.
- She, therefore, does not have the Nisaab in gold.
- However, if she converts the 80 grams of gold into silver it amounts to 700 grams of silver.
- And the cash converted to silver amounts to 100 grams of silver.
- Thus, the total amount equivalent in silver by Zainab is 800 grams.
- The silver Nisaab is 612,36 grams.
- Thus, Zakaat is Fardh upon her when a year passes over the gold and cash she has.
