Milk-Ties of Nabi (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) through Thuwaibah (Radhiyallahu Anha)
After having arrived into this world, Rasulullah (Sallallahu alaihi wasallam) drank the milk of his compassionate mother for seven days. After that, Thuwaibah (Radhiyallahu anha) breastfed Rasulullah (Sallallahu alaihi wasallam) for a few days.
The uncle of Rasulullah (Sallallahu alaihi wasallam), Hazrat Hamzah (Radhiyallahu anhu) was born two years before Rasulullah (Sallallahu alaihi wasallam). Thuwaibah (Radhiyallahu anha) also fed him and Abu Salamah (Radhiyallahu anhu), who was the cousin (paternal aunt’s) son) of Rasulullah (Sallallahu alaihi wasallam) and the nephew (sister’s son) of Hamzah (Radhiyallahu anhu). Therefore, both Hazrat Hamzah and Hazrat Abu Salamah were the milk brothers of Rasulullah (Sallallahu alaihi wasallam).
Once, it was said to Rasulullah (Sallallahu alaihi wasallam) that he should marry the daughter of Hazrat Hamzah (Radhiyallahu anhu). Rasulullah (Sallallahu alaihi wasallam) replied: “Hamzah is my milk brother. By virtue of milk-relations, his daughter is my niece, so it is not permissible for me to marry her.”
Similarly, people said to Rasulullah (Sallallahu alaihi wasallam) that they had heard of his intention to marry the daughter of Abu Salamah. Rasulullah (Sallallahu alaihi wasallam) answered: “How is it possible for me to marry her when, firstly, her mother (Umme Salamah) is in my nikaah, and besides that, Abu Salamah is my milk brother.”
Thuwaibah (Radhiyallahu anha) was the slave-girl of Abu Lahab. When she gave the good news to Abu Lahab of the birth of a son (i.e. Muhammad, Sallallahu alaihi wasallam) in the house of his brother, Abdullah, he freed her out of happiness and told her to be the wet-nurse of the baby.
From the account of some Ulama we learn that she became a Muslim, and she passed away after the migration of Rasulullah (Sallallahu alaihi wasallam) to Madinah Munawwarah.
Abu Lahab was the son of Abdul Muttalib and the uncle (father’s brother) of Rasulullah (Sallallahu alaihi wasallam). He became an avowed enemy of Nabi (Sallallahu alaihi wasallam). He died as a kaafir. Two of his sons, however, Utbah and Mu’tib became Muslims and Sahaabah.
