An Old Woman in the Army of Hazrat Musa (Alaihis Salaam)
When Fir’oun started his campaign of persecuting the Bani Israa-eel – forcefully taking work from them; beating them; and harassing them – then Hazrat Musa (Alaihis Salaam) was instructed by Allah Ta’ala to take the whole Bani Israa-eel at night and leave Misr (Egypt) so that they can escape the tyranny (zulm) of Fir’oun.
Musa (Alaihis Salaam) took all and they left. When they reached the River Nile, Hazrat Musa (Alaihis Salaam) forgot the way. No one could make out the way. In astonishment, Hazrat Musa called out: “Whoever can solve this problem, let him come forward and inform us.”
One old lady came forward and said: “When Hazrat Yusuf (Alaihis Salaam) was on his death bed, he made wasiyyat (a bequest) to his brothers and nephews: ‘If ever you leave Misr then take my coffin with you.’ So, as long as you do not take the coffin with you, you will not find the way.”
Hazrat Musa (Alaihis Salaam) enquired about the coffin, as to where it was buried. No one knew of its whereabouts, besides the same old lady. When she was asked, she said: “I am not going to tell you just like that. Give me an assurance of something then I will inform you.”
Hazrat Musa asked what was it? She replied: “Give me the assurance that I will die with Imaan, and I will get a place in Jannat where you will reside.” Hazrat Musa (Alaihis Salaam) called out to Allah Ta’ala: “O Allah! This is not in my hands.” The Divine Command came: “Give her the assurance, We will fulfil it.”
(This does not mean that the old lady became equal to Musa, Alaihis Salaam, in thawaab. It merely means that she will get a lofty stage in Jannat which is a great ni’mat. No one can attain the level of thawaab of a Nabi.)
Hazrat Musa gave her the assurance. The old woman divulged the whereabouts of the coffin, that it was in the middle of the river. Immediately upon taking the coffin out, the way was found.
Lessons
- Look at how great this old woman was!
- She never asked for any treasure of this world.
- She was concerned about the betterment of her Aakhirat.
- Ladies! You too should shun desire for this world.
- The world will be obtained according to what is in one’s destiny.
- Hold onto your Deen (because Jannat will not be attained without effort).
