The Knocking of the Qur’an on the Door of Our Hearts
Translation:
“Throughout its teachings, the Qur’an repeatedly urges mankind to listen attentively to advice and to act upon it.”
Explanation and Expansion for the Benefit of Humanity and Salvation in the Hereafter:
This profound statement by Hazrat Moulana Maseehullah Khan Saheb (Rahmatullahi alayh) captures the essence of the Qur’an’s message: it is not merely a book to be recited, but a divine guide meant to be heard with deep reflection and translated into righteous action.
Key Points for Reflection:
- The Qur’an “Knocks” on Our Hearts
The metaphor of the Qur’an “knocking” signifies Allah’s constant, merciful reminder to humanity. It is a call to awaken from negligence, to turn back to our purpose, and to align our lives with Divine Guidance. This knocking is an invitation to spiritual revival.
- Listening with Presence and Humility
True listening (istima’) in the Qur’anic sense is not passive hearing. It involves:
- Attentiveness of the heart (Qur’an, A’raaf, 7:204 – “So when the Qur’an is recited, then listen to it and pay attention that you may receive mercy.”)
- Humility and openness to change, rather than pride or resistance.
- Acting Upon Advice – The Path to Transformation
Knowledge without action is like a tree without fruit. The Qur’an consistently links Faith (Imaan) with righteous deeds (Al-A’maalus-saulihaat). Hearing advice is the first step; implementing it is what brings real change in character, conduct, and spirituality.
- A Universal Call for Salvation
This teaching is not limited to Ulama (scholars) or Mureedeen (devotees)—it is for all of humanity. Salvation in the Hereafter depends on heeding divine advice and living by it. As the Qur’an states:
“By time, indeed mankind is in loss, except for those who have believed and done righteous deeds and advised each other to truth and advised each other to patience.” (Qur’an, Asr, 103:1–3)
- Practical Steps for Spiritual Benefit:
- Daily Engagement with the Qur’an: Even a few verses with reflection daily will enliven the latent Deeni consciousness within one, Insha Allah.
- Seeking Knowledge from Pious Scholars: Their discourses, like those in Majaalis-e-Maseehul Ummat, help us understand how to apply Qur’anic teachings in daily life.
- Self-Accountability: Regularly ask: “What advice did I hear today, and how did I act upon it?”
Final Invitation:
Let us open the doors of our hearts when the Qur’an “knocks.” Through sincere listening and earnest action, we can attain:
- Inner peace in this world
- Divine pleasure and eternal salvation in the Hereafter
May Allah make us among those who listen to what is said and follow the best of it.
Ameen.
