THE LONGING FOR DIVINE UNION

Every soul that has drifted far from its own origin
Longs for and seeks once more the season of its intimate union.

Commentary from Kaleed-e-Mathnawi Reflected in the Translation

Mawlana Thanwi (Rahmatullahi alayh) explicitly states that the meaning of this verse is apparent — yet the very “apparentness” is deep. He points out that:

1. It is a universal law (qā‘idah): Every created being, by its very nature, seeks to return to its source. Water seeks its level; fire rises upwards; the soul seeks its Creator.
2. The reed’s complaint is not unique: It is simply acting according to its nature. Thus, the soul’s yearning is not an anomaly—it is the most natural thing in existence.
3. The “season of union” is not lost forever: The very fact that the soul seeks it proves that it remembers it — and that remembrance is the first ray of hope.
4. Practical takeaway: If you feel that inward pull towards Allah, towards purity, towards the company of the righteous — do not suppress it. That pull is your asl (origin) calling you back. That is the rozgār-e-wasl (season of union) knocking at your heart’s door.
