The Wife of Hazrat Musa (Alaihimas Salaam)

Reading Time: 2 minutes
  • Her name is Safoora.
  • She is the elder daughter of Nabi Shu’ayb (Alaihis Salaam).
  • When Hazrat Musa (Alaihis Salaam) unintentionally killed a kaafir in the city of Misr and Fir’oun was informed, Fir’oun had a council with his ministers, and it was decided to kill Musa (Alaihis Salaam).
  • When Musa (Alaihis Salaam) came to know about this, he secretly left for the city of Madyan.
  • When he reached the outskirts of the city he saw many shepherds drawing water from a well and giving their goats to drink.
  • Two females were obstructed from drawing water and giving their goats.
  • One of the girls was to be the wife of Hazrat Musa (Alaihis Salaam) and the other his sister-in-law.
  • Nabi Musa (Alaihis Salaam) asked them why they were there?
  • They replied that there was no able male in their home.
  • Therefore, they had to do the work themselves.
  • They said: “However, since we are females, we wait for the men to be done with their drawing of the water and leave.”
  • “We only draw water for our goats after all leave.”
  • Musa (Alaihis Salaam) took pity over their condition.
  • He drew water and gave their goats to drink.
  • The two went home and related the incident to their elderly father.
  • He sent his elder daughter to call the saintly person.
  • She came modestly and delivered the message.
  • Musa (Alaihis Salaam) went with her [walking ahead of her instead].
  • He met Nabi Shu’ayb (Alaihis Salaam).
  • Nabi Shu’ayb (Alaihis Salaam) consoled Musa (Alaihis Salaam)
  • He then said: “I wish to marry one of my daughters to you.”
  • “The condition, however, is that you tend to my goats for 8 or 10 years.”
  • Hazrat Musa (Alaihis Salaam) accepted.
  • He was then married to the elder daughter.
  • [After fulfilling the condition of working for the prescribed period] Musa (Alaihis Salaam) left with his wife for his homeland.
  • On the way, due to the cold, there was a need for a fire.
  • He saw a fire on Mount Toor.
  • When he reached the place of the fire, it turned out to be the Noor of Allah Ta’ala.
  • There he received Nubuwwat [he became a Nabi].

Lessons

  1. See with how much effort the girl used to do the household work!
  2. And she spoke to a stranger out of necessity.
  3. Then too, with how much modesty.
  4. Ladies! You should also not be lax and lazy in doing household work.
  5. And make it incumbent upon yourself to be modest and decent all the time.
