The Modernist and the Traditionalist

A lady I know recently showed me a copy of the Quran written on a single page which had been ordered from a missionary society in England. I was surprised to see two sheets of parchment instead of one. On the first was written the Quran. On the second which accompanied it, was a life-size portrait in full colour of the President of Egypt.

When she saw how shocked I was, she could not understand. “The President of Egypt has done so much for his people,” she said, “is this not the least we can do to honour him?”

When I replied that although our Holy Prophet did more for us than all the dictators in the world combined, he forbade us to create images of him or any other human being, however great, she only answered, “If no pictures or statues were made of our Holy Prophet and his Companions it was only because that was not done in those days. Today things have changed. We must be up-to-date.”

If this lady condones what the Prophet prohibited – creating a picture or statue of a man to detract from the honour which is worthy of Allah alone, then her five daily prayers are an utter waste of time.
