The Purpose of Pelting the Pillars is Zikrullah
The mystery in Rami Jimaar [Pelting of the Columns] is what is mentioned in a particular Hadeeth, that Pelting the Pillars was instituted for the sake of remembering Allah Ta’ala. The pebbles are to determine the amount of Zikr. Hence, when throwing each pebble saying, “ALLAHU AKBAR”, is required.
Abu Daawood and Tirmithi narrate from Hazrat Aishah (Radhiyallahu anha) that Rasulullah (Sallallahu alaihi wasallam) said:
اِنَّمَا جُعِلَ الطَّوَافُ بِالْبَيْتِ وَالسَّعْيُ بَيْنَ الصَّفَا وَالْمَرْوَةِ وَرَمْيُ الْجِمَارِ لِاِقَامَةِ ذِكْرِ اللهِ لَا لِغَيْرِه
“Tawaaf of the Baitullah, Sa’ee between Safa and Marwa, and Rami of the Jimaar were decreed to establish the Zikr of Allah, for no other reason.”
(Al-Masaalihul Aqliyyah)
In other words, although onlookers may be perplexed as to the reason behind this running between Safa and Marwa, and throwing of stones, but don’t scratch your head for an answer. Understand it to be a Command from Allah Ta’ala.
By carrying out these Commandments you are remembering your Allah; you are intensifying your bond with Him; it is a test of your love for Him in that something which does not seem apparently sensible, you accept it to be a Divine Command.
Moreover, submitting yourself at the Door of the Home of your Beloved and treading every lane of His Suburb are manifest movements of Divine Passion. (Hayaatul Muslimeen – Islaahi Nisaab)
